Our curriculum

In reception, we teach the statutory framework for the early years foundation stage. Please click here to view further information about the EYFS framework in our school.

In key stage 1 and 2, we teach the national curriculum in England: key stages 1 and 2 framework document. This contains the programmes of study and attainment targets for all subjects in key stages 1 and 2. Please click here to view further information about the national curriculum in our school.

We offer all children a broad and balanced curriculum.  We use a variety of teaching and learning strategies to support the learning needs of all children. Detailed curriculum provision overviews for each term and can be found in the class pages.

In reception, the seven areas of learning and development are delivered through a wide variety of well structured play based activities, much of which takes place in the outdoor learning environment.

In year 1 much of the learning continues to be play based and this helps to support a smooth transition from early years foundation stage into key stage 1.

In years 1- 6 our school curriculum is based on the children's development of key skills which are progressive throughout the school. This allows some of the areas to be taught as a theme and the content to be flexible.

Children in key stage 2, from year 3-6, are taught French weekly and all children undertake swimming lessons during the year at Horncastle Swimming Pool.


The THRASS system for teaching synthetic phonics, underpinned by the government produced document Letters and Sounds, supports reading, writing and spelling. It begins in reception and progresses throughout the school.


A variety of reading scheme books and "real" books are used to teach reading throughout the school. Reading schemes used include those published by the Oxford University Press such as Oxford Reading Tree and Treetopsand those published by Ginn such as All Aboard. Once children have learned to read with some fluency, they use Accelerated Reader which supports the development of their comprehension and understanding of the books they have read.


In the early years foundation stage, assessments of the children's learning are made throughout the reception year. National tasks and tests (SATS) are undertaken in year 2 (end of key stage 1) and year 6 (end of key stage 2). Tests are also taken at the end of year 3, 4 and 5 to help track each child's progress and support teacher assessment. Reading and spelling age tests are also undertaken to monitor each child's progress.

How do we enrich our school curriculum?

During the year, themed days are planned and delivered to enhance and enrich the children's learning experiences by providing them with first hand practical experiences. Please visit the gallery to view some examples of these.

Our curriculum is supplemented by after school clubs including music, computer, film, chess and a variety of sports clubs throughout the year.
